Phantom Limbs
I came to Dispel for D6s because I was getting into Warhammer. I didn’t get why people were so excited about individual D20s yet. RedTigress welcomed me in, sent me a bunch of D6s for free, and gave me my first seven-piece set. She was kind of my spirit guide.
On March 16, we were talking about some D6 sets she had for sale. I asked whether she’d ever thought about selling individual pieces from seven-piece sets. She hadn’t, but she encouraged me to try. She pointed out that people might buy the D20 and leave me with the other six dice. I was fine keeping the leftovers.
She was working on a mixed set herself: a Cantaloupe Sorbet D20, a CMYK D12, and pieces from Storm Cloud, Love Potion, Coral Rose, and Chiffon Petals. We thought Mermaid’s Laughter might work for the percentile. We were going through my dice to see what she could use.
We could split seven sets between seven people, with everyone getting all seven shapes and no two dice from the same set. I’d counted six sets I could use, then remembered I had Synthwave. I was going to bust up sets, disrupt the economy, and enjoy the process. She told me, “I await Appa’s Emporium, create your own set.”
I called it Phantom Limbs and posted it for less than the cost of a standard set, even with Iconics and Liquid Cores included. Seven people signed up. Everyone gave me their preferences, and I made seven pieces of original art to go with the sets. RedTigress was one of those first seven. I don’t think she even got the pieces she’d originally wanted after all that.
Later, I bought a set on eBay and received a Phantom Limbs set of my own. The seller apparently knew who I was. I remember the package coming from Canada, but my wife had already thrown away the packaging by the time I thought to look for clues. I messaged the seller and never heard back.
If you’re reading this, I’d still love to know who you are. Thank you for sending me one.
Phantom Limbs for life.
